You may have seen an ant nest which is a common sign of an infestation. An ant nest looks like a small pile of soil or dirt. Ants chose to nest in quiet dark places such as inside walls. A nest can be difficult to spot but if you see several ants around your property, it may be worthwhile having a look for a nest in any dark quiet areas of your home.
Some ant species will lay a pheromone trail to a food source. By doing this other ants are attracted to the pheromone that will lead them to a food source. You may be able to see multiple ants travelling together in a line, if you can follow the line, you may be able to find the food source encouraging the infestation or the ants entry point.

Most ants enter our properties on the hunt for food. They are attracted to mainly sweet and sticky items, but if your property is supplying ants with a constant source of food an infestation can become a regular occurrence. Below we give you our top tips for preventing an ant infestation in your property:
- Clean up any food or liquid spillages on work surfaces, tables, and floors as soon as they occur. This is especially important for any sweet and sticky produce, the residue from a sweet and sticky product can be difficult to clear up if left too long, and as soon as an ant is alerted to a sticky substance it won’t take long for them to let the rest of the colony know!
- Brushing and mopping up any food or liquid spillages, pay careful attention to under any units and kitchen appliances- these can be easily missed by the human eye but for a tiny ant on the search for food they can easily get into these small spaces!
- Store your food safely in upright sealed containers- try to reduce open produce packages to the bare minimum.
- Make sure any entry points in your walls, doors, and window frames are sealed off- this will make it difficult for ants to even enter your property in the first place!
- Make sure all outdoor bins are sealed and no rubbish is left open. Ants’ natural habitat is outdoors and having any unsealed and open rubbish/ bins outside your home is an easy place for ants to find a food source and once they are made aware of this it becomes all too easy for them to venture inside your property!
