Why we need to control birds?

Apart from the obvious (their mess, their noise, and the disruption they cause), there are some other- slightly more dangerous reasons why we need to control birds when they begin to invade our human environment.

Pathogens and Diseases

Birds are known to carry a wide range of diseases that can be hazardous to human health which is one of the most important reasons why avoiding a bird infestation is paramount. Pigeons are known to carry more than 110 pathogens and several research studies have shown that it is possible for wild birds to pass on these diseases to humans- these diseases can spread not only from direct contact with birds but also through their droppings. Some of the main and most common diseases and pathogens birds can spread are salmonella, E. Coli, fowl, and Psittacosis- in 2019 two patients in Glasgow cause of death was directly linked to a fungal infection caused by pigeon droppings!

Secondary Pet Infestations

Pigeons are host species they can be home to ticks, fleas, and bird mites. When you have a bird infestation it is likely a secondary pest issue can arise from their presence- these pests can rapidly multiply to create an even bigger problem. So, it is incredibly important to get any bird infestation under control before your property becomes overran by an array of pests!

Safety Issues

Birds can cause several safety issues for humans, not only are their droppings corrosive and toxic, but they are also very slippery- accidents and injuries can be caused when fresh droppings are not spotted, and people slip! Furthermore, we have probably all been subjected to a seagull attack when enjoying some chips at the seaside, but sometimes these creatures can attack unprovoked and have been known to cause some nasty injuries and even draw blood!

Damage to Property

Bird droppings are acidly strong, and they have the protentional to corrode metal, stonework, and brickwork. There are statues and historical buildings in cities up and down the country that have been defaced by bird droppings- having them invade your premises for a prolonged period of time may leave your property damaged like these statues and buildings! Furthermore, if your premises is covered in droppings and has multiple birds roosting on its roof, it can be unsightly- especially in a business. Birds also gather nesting materials which can block your chimney and gutters leading to carbon monoxide issues and overflows.

Birds in your Business

Having a bird infestation in your business can have detrimental effetcs on your reputation. If your business becomes home to pigeons, it will not take long for the public and your customers to realise- pigeons will make your business seem unhygienic, unclean, and unsafe and in many cases will encourage customers to shop elsewhere. If you are operating a food business and you do not have effective bird proofing measures in place and you fall victim to a bird infestation that isn’t treated promptly, you can put yourself at risk of being prosecuted under the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations (1995). Here, at Defender Pest Control we can provide your business with incredibly effective bird proofing measures and monthly visits to keep any future bird infestations away!

How to spot a Bird Infestation

Birds are a nuisance when they invade our homes and businesses and there are some premises that provide an ideal habitat for birds to occupy. Pigeons and seagulls are incredibly adaptable creatures and they have learnt to how to survive most environments, if birds have a consistent supply of food and a safe place to nest it becomes easy for them to multiple and trickier for them to be removed. It is important to recognise what birds require in a location and the initial signs of an infestation so that action can be taken swiftly to control any outbreak.

Location requirements

  • A tall building as birds like to see what’s going on around them.
  • A safe place for them to nest and protect their young- often high up away from human interference and other risk factors.
  • A nearby food source.
  • A sheltered area-providing warmth and protection from the elements.

Initial infestation signs

  • Spotting lots of bird activity on ledges and roofs.
  • Loud bird noises.
  • Finding nesting materials around your home or business.
  • Damaged stock.
  • Increased droppings.
  • Blocked gutters from their nesting materials.
  • Secondary pest infestations that can be directly linked to a bird infestation.
